Peter Wise, a motivational speaker and radio presenter, recently helped to raise funds for the West Rand Disability Association.
Peter has been involved in radio for more than four decades and was inducted into the SA Radio Hall of Fame in 2020. He spent one year working for a radio station in Mozambique and has spent seven years on air in South Africa. He can be heard on LM Radio and is also a voice-over artist and talent coach.
Peter was born in Port Elizabeth and moved to Joburg in 1990. As a result of a rare virus contracted during pregnancy, Peter was born with a physical disability that resulted in a debilitating deformity and movement in all four limbs.
During a Barnyard Theatre show at Silverstar recently, he raised funds which was donated to the association as a contribution towards their admin and projects.
He explained that he tries to have fundraisers like these twice a year mainly for organisations caring for people with physical disabilities like the Ann Harding Cheshire Home where he lived for over a year.
These days, he lives in a cottage and has two caregivers who support him. Some of the struggles he faces daily include severe lower back pain due to a degenerating vertebra. He is on chronic medication, has to do exercises, and eat healthy, but even with this he tries to stay positive about his future.
Despite his disability, Peter has been involved in many community organisations.
“I have numerous inspirational and humorous stories to tell – to motivate my audience to be strong, considerate, caring and community service oriented.”
He added that he always tells people to try and be positive even when they are feeling down and whether it is on the radio or at events he strives to make people smile.
Speaking about the event, Peter concluded it was a fabulous and successful afternoon.
