DAR ES SALAAM: AS the United Nations (UN) marks 78th anniversary today, the body’s Resident Coordinator, Mr Zlatan Milisic has commended Tanzania for good pace of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amid global economic turbulent caused by Covid-19 and the on-going geopolitical tensions.
Mr Milisic, accompanied by the country’s Director of Multilateral Cooperation, Ambassador Noel Kaganda made the statement on Monday during a press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East Africa Cooperation sub office in Dar es Salaam.
He said concerted government efforts including creation of favourable economic policies safeguarded the country from hyperinflation in comparison to many countries across the world, which experienced economic tremor. He said Tanzania SDGs achievements are palpable.
Mr Milisic said in 2007, Tanzania was among the eight countries across the world which piloted the UN Delivering as One Reforms which were designed to strengthen the global body efficiency, effectiveness and coherent its operation at country level noting its amongst Tanzania iconic commitment in enhancing UN principles.
More significantly, he said in July last year, Tanzania launched the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, which acts as the roadmap for realisations of SDGs by giving opportunities to all stakeholders including the UN to offers in areas that need support.
In that regard, he said the UN Day which goes by the theme “Investing in tomorrow today leveraging Tanzania young population’’ aims on emphasising critical role of youth on realising SGDs by ensuring they acquire quality education and better health services.
He said celebration of the UN Day which will be marked at the Karimjee Ground tomorrow (today) will assess the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frame in one year (from July 2022 to June 2023).
For his part Country’s Director of Multilateral Cooperation, Amb Kaganda speaking on behalf of the Minister of Foreign affair and East Africa Cooperations, Mr January Makamba said the Tanzania has been living to UN core values by promoting peace by being part of UN Peace Keeping Missions and enforcing dialogues to warring countries, enhancing human rights, fostering rule of law among others since in 1961 when the country was named as the body’s member.
Amb Kaganda said this year UN Day ceremony at national level at will be graced by the Minister of Natural Resource and Tourism, Ms Angella Kairuki calling all citizens to attend the important event.
