On Monday, 10 July, the participants of the BRICS Global Media Tour visited the UN Information Centre in Moscow, where they took part in the session “UN Work in Russia. SDGs and Media”.

Vladimir Kuznetsov, Director of the United Nations Information Center in Moscow, noted that the UNIC in Moscow and the team of UN agencies working in Russia were pleased to welcome the heads of the leading media of the BRICS and African countries in the capital of the Russian Federation.

He also thanked the TV BRICS International Media Network for hosting the meeting with the delegates.

“We had an opportunity to have a sincere conversation, to discuss the issues that concern people working in the media space. Issues of information flows, of the digital space, of the challenges we face. And we thought together about how the United Nations can be useful to help people from different countries and cultures, representing different civilisations, to talk to each other, to hear and respect each other”

Kuznetsov stressed that media centres play a very important role in interacting with the media community: “Our task is to tell about what the UN is doing, what our approaches are in different areas of the mandate of the world organization, including in terms of digital space, in terms of distribution of information in social networks, in terms of publishing, in terms of the language in which we conduct dialogue with different audiences. We are open and ready to share our experience, our approaches, our principles. And for us it is fundamentally important that we support diversity, cultural and civilisational differences that exist between and within communities”.

“A very important part of the media programme was the meeting at the UN Information Centre in Moscow, which is a partner of the TV BRICS. It was very important for us to share with the delegates our experience of co-operation with the UN in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals. I am glad that we had a very active discussion. Delegates asked whether there are UN information centres in their countries and how to interact with them. It was important for us to show that Russia is actively integrated into the international context and international activities. This is why such events as a meeting at the UN Information Centre in Moscow and, of course, the Global Energy International Prize were included in the media tour programme. All this emphasises Russia’s status as an international power that hosts and conducts events of international level”

Janna Tolstikova CEO of TV BRICS

She also noted that delegates from BRICS countries and Africa agreed during the discussion that the media should increase the number of positive news items. The mission of TV BRICS, which is also supported by the Information Centre, is to increase the number of such stories.

“We talk about constructive, peace-loving agenda. We talk about areas of co-operation between different countries and try to draw people’s attention to such topics as culture, traditions, tourism, business, economy, exactly those areas where we have something to share with each other, something to learn from each other. And this is very important from the point of view of the TV BRICS mission and, of course, the activities of the UN Information Centres around the world,” added Janna Tolstikova.

German Hermin Ferras Alvarez, head of the Cuban edition of Prensa Latina in Moscow, believes that such platforms as TV BRICS and other national media in the “five” countries allow to cover information that is not covered in other media.

He said that it is very important to have such Information Centres in each country, as these organisations provide an opportunity to look at any topic from different angles and take into account different opinions.

On his part, Nyana Molete, editor-in-chief of the BRICS Africa Channel appreciated the discussion.

“The media operates in a certain context and then it is important for us to disseminate truthful information from reliable sources. Apart from that, I think it’s also important to disseminate information that is about development, bringing people around the world together and not something that divides us. So I think it was a very fruitful discussion”
