Anyang’ Nyong’o gets top UN job

The appointment by Guterres means that the Kisumu governor, who is serving his second term, will join the UN Advisory Board and will be tasked with enhancing local and regional governments engagement

Nyong’o, a renowned scholar and seasoned politician, was brought on board to strengthen the intergovernmental planning processes between regional and local governments.

The Advisory Group is expected to advise the UN Secretary-General on issues involving local and regional governments’ engagement and make member States aware of decisions made and actions to be taken.

Key areas that the Advisory Group which Nyong’o joins will address include sustainable development, social inclusivity, climate action, new urban agenda, gender equality and human rights.

These processes are aimed at helping governments achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) courtesy of smooth intergovernmental procedures.

“As a member of the Advisory Group, I trust I can count on your knowledge and expertise on multi-level governance to localise and align efforts to achieve the SDGs,” Guterres stated.

Guterres said that the formation of the Advisory Group was a blessing to UN Member States as it will promote inclusive, networked and effective multilateralism as envisioned by Guterres’ “Our Common Agenda”.

Anyang’ Nyong’o thanks UN boss Antonio Guterres

Nyong’o was grateful for the appointment, saying it was an honour bestowed on him to become part of the advisory group.

“With humility, I accept this appointment and promise that I will do my best to promote the ideals and objectives of the UN as a member of the Advisory Group in advancing the cause of local and regional governments”.

Nyong’o, who is also the current vice president of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) in East Africa, successfully hosted the 9th Africities Summit in Kisumu in 2022.
