Our true nature is rooted in PHILOS. However, historically, we have drifted towards societal infrastructures and societal thinking that do not align with PHILOS. – “PHILOS: Love or Friend”

The events of 2020 were a series of catalytic historical events that revealed the dire need for more philos and more humanity. 2020 served as a global, inescapable mirror that uncovered the urgent need for us to reconnect to the higher side of our true nature. While the pandemic roared, we were also confronted with one of humanity’s oldest challenges, and that is our rudimentary inability and our collective proclivity to not think inclusively and equitably in all that we do, and our tendency to not value ALL life.

Today’s headlines are the invitation for us to honor the call to create a better world for all. Our headlines frequently report of school shootings, divisiveness, and other scary things. Underneath the headlines, can you hear the cries of our children who are afraid to go to school? If you listen closer, you’ll hear our ancestors begging us to unify and release the divisive energy of our nation’s past. If you tune in, you’ll hear Mother Earth imploring us to become more responsible stewards of our natural resources. If you commune with your own heart, you’ll hear that your being alive, at such a time as this, means that you are uniquely situated and divinely engineered to serve the solutions of our age. Philanthropy is indeed our collective compass and our way.

Philanthropy: (Greek) Aeschylus coined it during the 5th century BCE meaning “love of humanity.” Today, philanthropy means generosity in all its forms… Giving gifts of “time, talent and treasure” to help make life better for others.

I am incredibly grateful to be a member of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta’s Philanthropic Advisor Leadership Institute (PALI) graduating class of 2023, a program that is dedicated to leading the practice of Philanthropy by teaching lawyers and financial professionals how to incorporate charitable planning into the estate and financial counseling services that we provide. I am also elated that our 2023 PALI graduation on Thursday, May 18 will be held at the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship (RICE). Herman J. Russell and The Russell Family are American history and their legacy is a pillar of excellence and a beacon of hope to the Black community. PALI and RICE are philos-forward organizations that are both committed to building equity into the wealth accumulation process. Partnerships are a key component to building a more diverse, equitable and inclusive world.

As lawyers and financial professionals, we are trusted thought partners and essential servant leaders in the human supply chain that enables the practice of philanthropy. Our duty to educate and counsel clients positions us to have direct influence on where and how dollars flow. We get to teach clients how to integrate the practice of philanthropy into their lifestyles and their wealth planning. Where people put their dollars, time and treasure will form the infrastructure of the society that our children inherit. The best cure for the disturbing headlines of our time is action, and not just any action, but aligned philanthropic action. May we all give of our time, talent, and treasure to causes that are dear to us and that re-connect us to our true nature so that we may create a world where we are all safe in our own skin… a world where inclusive intelligence, environmental stewardship, and philanthropy are engrafted into normalcy and culture.
