PARAMARIBO, (CMC):
Suriname has gained membership to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), 23 years after first applying to the body that coordinates the economic and social work of the United Nations and the UN family of organisations.
The Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country was overwhelmingly elected by the United Nations General Assembly, receiving the votes of 189 members.
Its membership to the council, which consists of 54 members, will be for the period January 1, 2024, through December 31, 2026.
ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the United Nations and is a crucial organ charged with promoting the three dimensions of sustainable development, namely, the economic, social and environmental dimensions.
It is an important platform for achieving internationally agreed goals, as well as being responsible for the follow-up of UN conferences and summits. One can mention the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation said that every year, ECOSOC organises a ministerial meeting to discuss important economic, social and environmental issues.
“In the margins of this meeting, member countries of the UN can also present the implementation of the SDGs in their respective countries. Suriname presented its Voluntary National Review for the first time in 2022,” the ministry said.
