National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has advised President Bola Tinubu to establish an energy security centre of excellence or national agency for energy security.
Ribadu spoke, yesterday, at the ongoing Defence Week organised by the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, for the participants of Senior Executive Course (SEC) 45 in the institute.
Urging the Federal Ministry of Power and that of Petroleum Resources to sponsor an executive bill for the establishment of energy security centre of excellence, the NSA stressed that when established, the centre would venture up a strategic plan for energy security in the country.
According to him, the centre should ensure linkage between strategic plan for energy security and the national strategy for the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure in the plan.
He advised the Federal Ministry of Environment and Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and other relevant agencies should convey a committee for the development of a national action plan for the mitigation of climate emergency.
The NSA urged the environment ministry to incorporate all the targets in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and all other United Nations (UN) programmes to enable Nigeria to benefit from Carbon Credit Act.
Also, he advised the Federal Government for a more robust implementation of the national industrial revolution plan.
One of the most pressing challenges Nigeria faces today is ensuring energy security, as the industries require a reliable and sustainable energy supply to operate efficiently and meet the growing demands of the economy, he pointed out.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to the impact of climate change, which threatens our environment, economy and wellbeing of our citizens.”
We have witnessed rising temperatures and rainfall patterns, which have led to flooding over the years claiming several lives and properties worth several millions of naira,” he added, while urging the country to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact and adapt to the changing climate.
