STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On Tuesday, just days after the passing of community leader Alan S. Bernikow, as hundreds of family members, friends, and business associates gathered for a Memorial/Celebration of Life Service in his honor at the Joan & Alan Bernikow JCC, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis recognized Bernikow on the floor of the House of Representatives.
Bernikow, revered in the worlds of business and philanthropy and served as a director on a number of public company boards, as well as charitable organizations, died Sept. 26 in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center after a battle with leukemia.
He would ultimately reach the top of the corporate ladder and became a CEO entrusted with the task of making crucial company decisions.
Throughout his journey, he embodied honesty and loyalty, embracing respect, compassion and humility. And he never failed to demonstrate a deep regard for the dignity of others.
Malliotakis thought it fitting to recognize Bernikow for his service to the community, adding his story to the official Congressional Record.
During a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, she said:
“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life and memory of Alan Bernikow whose generosity impacted thousands of Staten Islanders. Alan was a mentor, and a dear friend of mine, a passionate community leader an entrepreneur and philanthropist looking to make difference in the lives to those around him…”
She added, “He and his wife Joan were married over 50 years and they donated their time, their energy and their resources to the JCC which bears their name. Today on Staten Island there is a celebration of Alan’s life. And I send my deepest condolences to his family and friend and our community during this difficult time. And I thank you Mr. Speaker for adding this tribute of Alan’s life to the official Congressional Record.”
