Outer Banks Community Foundation awards $134,873 to nine nonprofits

The Community Foundation has awarded $94,873 in Community Enrichment grants to eight nonprofits to support causes that include a new dental clinic, education for community leaders, recreation for all, the arts, people with disabilities, and older adults. An additional 40th Anniversary grant for $40,000 was awarded to Interfaith Community Outreach for substance abuse prevention and recovery.

Interfaith Community Outreach is expanding their collaboration with Outer Banks Relief Foundation and Dare County Health and Human Services Department with a $40,000 grant to increase accessibility to and funding of mental health and substance abuse counseling services for more people in our community. This grant is awarded by the Community Foundation’s board of directors as a 40th Anniversary gift to the community.

Community Care Clinic of Dare received funding to support the construction of a brand new, safety-net dental clinic. Community Care Clinic of Dare’s dental clinic will contribute to better overall health and reduce healthcare costs by providing regular dental care for uninsured and under-insured Dare County residents of all ages and backgrounds.

Surf Pediatrics Foundation was awarded a grant to support their “Everyone’s Playground” project at Kitty Hawk Elementary School. Surf Pediatrics Foundation is raising $800,000 for this project. Visitors and residents of all ages and abilities will have public access to a new universal-design playground when school is not in session, including during the summer months.

Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series received funding to bring the NC Symphony Orchestra’s string and wind ensembles to the Outer Banks to deliver in-school programs, master classes, and public concerts in local schools and communities.

Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men was awarded a grant to install more outside electric wheelchair lifts on raised island homes for residents who are unable to use their stairs. These lifts make it possible for residents to leave their homes to shop, visit with doctors, and engage with the community, nature, and society.

Dare to Care OBX Heart Health, a project to screen adults over age 60 and younger adults with pre-existing conditions for health issues that lead to heart disease, was awarded funding to purchase equipment and pay sonographers to continue to provide free vascular screenings at upcoming clinics. The project is presented jointly by all four local Rotary Clubs.

Outer Banks Forum received a grant to present “A Tribute to the Legendary Ladies of Soul,” a celebration of gospel and soul music. The 2024 concert will promote the rich cultural heritage of these two distinctly American genres while advancing diversity and highlighting the power of music to foster unity, inspire change, and uplift people.

Saving Lives Task Force was awarded funding to continue and enhance their interactive, educational group workshops for residents attending Dare County Recovery Court. Workshop topics include pain and stress management, nutrition, self-care, healthy relationships, finance, and goal attainment.

Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce received a grant to offset tuition costs for nonprofit leaders to attend Leadership OBX 2023 – 2024.

 

The Outer Banks Community Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization that inspires philanthropy and connects people who care with causes that matter. The Community Foundation manages 220 charitable funds for individuals and agencies, including 70 scholarship funds; awards grants to nonprofits and scholarships for higher education, and provides tailored services to help donors pursue their charitable interests. Since its inception in 1982, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $13 million in grants and scholarships.
