Name Dropping | Fellows program honors two Cabrillo students – Santa Cruz Sentinel

Must Read

Mateo Donato and Dustin Lopez have been selected as Cabrillo College Local Government Fellows. Both students are starting their final year at Cabrillo and will transfer to four-year schools for their undergraduate degrees. Both Donato and Lopez are the first in their respective families to attend college.

The Cabrillo College Local Government Fellows Program was created in 2021 by current and former local government leaders throughout Santa Cruz County and the Cabrillo College Foundation. The goal of the program is to encourage and support Cabrillo College students to pursue careers in local government.

As Local Government Fellows, the students receive a $2,000 scholarship, an internship in a local jurisdiction, and a mentor.

In the summer of 2024, Donato will intern with the city of Capitola and Lopez will intern with the city of Scotts Valley.

Exchange student to visit

Santa Cruz Sister Cities Support is resuming exchange student trips between Santa Cruz and its sister cities.

The first student to participate this year is Martina Marsiglia from Santa Cruz’s Italian Sister City, Sestri Levante.

Marsiglia, 19, will arrive Sept. 6 in Santa Cruz and will return to Italy on Sept. 20 and will be staying with two local families.

Anyone interested in meeting her during her visit can email casavivo@aol.com to arrange a time and place or phone or text 831-429-9100.

Bay Fed contributes

Bay Federal Credit Union employees raised $16,420.15 during their annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraiser. With the addition of a philanthropic match from CO-OP Financial Services of $5,000, Bay Federal presented the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals with a check for $21,420.15.

Every year, the seven Bay Federal branches and call center join in a competition to raise funds by holding contests, decorating branch locations with Children’s Miracle Network Hospital themes, and encouraging community members to “out-give” each other by posting names of large donors on the digital signage that runs in all branch locations. This fundraising method earns the Credit Union CO-OP Financial Services’ Miracle Match of $5,000.

The Credit Union’s Scotts Valley branch won first place for the most funds raised, while Watsonville trailed close behind in second place. For added decorative competition, the Capitola Branch came in first place for its bakery-themed decorations and Scotts Valley in second for its Mario Kart theme.

Hospital receives donation

In collaboration with the Dominican Hospital Foundation, Dignity Health Dominican Hospital announced that it received a transformative donation of $1 million toward a $2.145 million philanthropy-funded campaign. The Wellness on Wheels campaign will expand the availability of vital medical care in underserved communities in Santa Cruz County, according to a release announcing the donation.

The foundation’s Wellness on Wheels campaign aims to be completely donor-funded through community support. It will enable the expansion of current services and enhance its capacity to deliver essential health care services directly to those who need them most.

“Our Mobile Wellness Clinic is a lifeline for those who may otherwise struggle to receive the care they require,” said Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz, president and CEO of Dominican Hospital, in a prepared release.

Education

Isabel Lawrence, of Santa Cruz, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2022 and the spring 2023 semesters at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
