Nairobi to host Bill and Melinda Gates regional office

Must Read

President William Ruto’s Cabinet has approved the establishment of sub-regional office of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Kenya.

During the meeting convened at State House, Nairobi on Tuesday concluded that having the office in the country will attract investors.

“Cabinet approved the hosting of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s sub-regional office in Kenya,” a statement on the Cabinet Resolutions read.

“The collaboration will support healthcare, agricultural transformation and economic growth, attracting increased investments to the country.”

The establishment of sub-regional office in Kenya was discussed on February 14 when Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua met with the regional representative of the Foundation, Samburu Wa-Shiko.

The Foundation, which is co-chaired by Bill and his estranged wife Melinda, committed to spend $7 billion dollars (Sh877bn) over the next four years to support countries in Africa.

In the country, the Foundation has focused on primary health care, gender equality and agriculture among others.

These areas overlap with the Foundation’s expertise, Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.

In agriculture, it invests in technology, tools and market infrastructure to help the small scale farmers to improve their productivity and incomes.
