Barbadians are being encouraged to support businesses that give back to society.
Minister in the office of the Attorney General with Responsibility for Crime Prevention Corey Lane, delivering the featured address at the Grand Opening and Staff Appreciation of the Reggae Flava Restaurant Inc, Bay Street, St Michael, on Sunday, declared that the time had come for Barbadians to exercise “citizen social responsibility”.
“Seek out companies like this that give back to society and give back to the community because you are giving back to yourself. It is about time that we look within ourselves and look within our communities and look within our society to see companies and embrace companies that have that corporate social responsibility.
“[Seek out] companies that understand us, companies that give back to us, and in this case, it is a case where you are not only giving back to society, but you are getting some flavour,” Lane stated.
The management of Reggae Flava announced, during the opening, it was donating a “new office” to the Barbados Police Boys and Girls Club, an organisation dedicated to nurturing and empowering young people.
“You [Reggae Flava] are just what the doctor ordered, and like a pharmacist, you are filling that social prescription. In our society today, there are many young people who are isolated, and they don’t feel like they belong, and I believe it is organisations like the Police Boys and Girls Club that must engage them.
“So whatever you donate today, whether it be an office, whether it be sports gear, it will not be used to catch dust because my ministry will be engaging particularly at-risk and high-risk young people to get involved in more activities. So groups like the Police Boys and Girls Club and the Prince’s Trust, and those other organisations must be equipped and ready for the new windfall of activity in this country,” he said.
The Member of Parliament for The City also commended the restaurant for not only showing appreciation to customers for supporting the business but also for awarding staff members for their commitment and dedication to Reggae Flava.
“Any company that takes care of its staff, the staff will take care of the customers. Particularly when you are dealing with food, you want the staff to be happy. So for me, it underscores that you are a company that understands what you are about and a company that you can feel happy and safe interacting with knowing that the staff are happy and therefore, you will produce and make sure that we, the customers are happy,” Lane said.
Reggae Flava’s spokesman Yannic Boyce said the food business was established one year ago by Barbadian Troy Scantlebury and his Jamaican wife Kadian Scantlebury, creating employment opportunities for citizens and merging the Jamaican and Barbadian cultures.
“Firstly, I want to express gratitude to the incredible team behind Reggae Flava, who have poured their hearts and soul into making this dream a reality. We extend our deepest appreciation to you. These folks have been working tirelessly to bring you the true taste of Jamaica, and they have nailed it. Your unwavering commitment, creativity, and expertise have shaped this restaurant into a true embodiment of the Jamaican spirit. We honour your hard work and dedication, and we are immensely proud to have you as part of our team,” Boyce said.
Boyce also expressed gratitude to the restaurant’s customers for supporting the establishment. (AH)
