When it comes to a musical artist who is a beacon of positivity, love, and unity, Michael Franti is undoubtedly one of the first names that come to mind. His profound commitment as an advocate against gun violence, his devotion as a yogi, and his ability to tell powerful stories through music make him a significant figure in today’s world, which often seems overshadowed by division and discord.
In 2019 and once again in 2022, I had the extraordinary opportunity to visit Bali and immerse myself in the enchanting atmosphere of Soulshine Bali, a retreat center co-founded by Franti himself. Set against Bali’s lush landscapes, Soulshine provides a serene sanctuary for self-discovery, healing, and connection.
What made these experiences truly special was the intimate setting. Each retreat was attended by Michael, his wife Sara, their son Taj, and about 25 other amazing individuals (Soulrockers). This close-knit environment provided ample opportunities to interact with Michael and truly understand the depth of his character. I can personally attest to what an exceptional human being he is, and how his message of peace and love permeates not just his music, but every aspect of his life and work.
One of the standout moments from my retreat experiences at Soulshine was an evening when we all gathered in a circle for introductions. Michael took the time to go around the circle, not only remembering each person’s name but also engaging with us in earnest conversation about the retreat, its rich history, and our personal journeys. His authenticity, curiosity, and the sincere interest he showed in every individual were truly heartwarming.
What struck me most was a particular incident that revealed his genuine caring nature. As everyone was leaving the studio, Michael overheard me questioning someone about the air conditioning. Without a moment’s hesitation, he followed me and my friend back to our room, took it upon himself to fix the air conditioning, and spent an hour with us. During this time, he shared that our room, named “Sounds of Sunshine,” was the very place where he had recorded the song of the same name. This level of personal interaction and his willingness to ensure the comfort of his guests left a lasting impression on me. It is experiences like these that truly set Michael apart.
And let’s not forget his music. With three Billboard No. 1’s and numerous other accolades under his belt, Michael Franti & Spearhead’s music is as uplifting as it is catchy. But more than just a musician, Franti is an activist who uses his platform to advocate against gun violence, and his philanthropic efforts extend to his non-profit, Do It For The Love, founded with his amazing wife, Sara. The organization brings people with life-threatening illnesses, veterans, and children with severe challenges to concerts worldwide, making a difference in thousands of lives.
On June 21, 2023, Michael Franti & Spearhead will be infusing their positive energy and inspiring music into Artpark. Known for its scenic ambiance and outstanding acoustics, Artpark serves as an ideal venue to fully embrace Franti’s transformative melodies.
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Michael in anticipation of his upcoming performance. He is currently putting the finishing touches on his album “Big Big Love.” When I asked him to define “Big Big Love,” his answer was as enlightening as his music. Michael explained that while we often express love for ourselves and our families, “Big Big Love” represents the expansion of this emotion. It’s about embracing our partners, our community, and all of humanity. He eloquently stated, “we are all capable of this love… with the division experienced in the media, we have more in common and need this love more than ever.”
Michael’s mission is to inspire change and uplift others, a sentiment that is palpably felt in his music and his actions. Despite his ever-growing popularity, Michael remains down-to-earth and connected with local communities during his tours. He still makes time to engage in activities like shooting hoops at a local YMCA or practicing yoga at a nearby studio.
Don’t miss this opportunity to join Michael Franti & Spearhead at Artpark tomorrow. It promises to be more than just a concert; it’s an experience of unity, love, and music that will leave you feeling inspired and uplifted.
I’ll leave you with a little something to get you in the mood for what’s to come: “Big Big Love” on YouTube.
