IsDB President Leads High-Level Delegation to the 78th U.N. General Assembly in New York | News

Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 13 September 2023 – The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) President and Chairman of the IsDB Group, H.E. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, is leading a high-level delegation of the IsDB Group – Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to attend its 78th session on the theme, “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.” in New York on 17-24 September 2023.

During the U.N. General Assembly Meetings, the IsDB President’s delegation will engage in high-level discussions and meetings with world leaders, policymakers, and representatives from international organizations. The delegation will actively contribute to dialogues on key topics, including:

  1. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The IsDB President will emphasize the bank’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the SDGs, particularly in areas such as poverty alleviation, healthcare, education, gender equality, and climate action.
  2. Financing for Development: The delegation will highlight IsDB’s efforts in mobilizing resources to address the financing gap for development projects. They will explore innovative financing mechanisms, including Islamic finance, partnerships, and investment opportunities that can drive sustainable development.
  3. Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability: Due to the urgency of addressing climate change, the IsDB President’s delegation will advocate for increased investments in renewable energy, climate adaptation, and resilience-building initiatives. They will emphasize the importance of collaboration to mitigate the effects of climate change.
  4. Digital Transformation: The delegation will discuss the role of digital innovation and technology in advancing socio-economic development. They will explore the potential of digital solutions in areas such as financial inclusion, e-commerce, and digital infrastructure.

Furthermore, President Al Jasser will explore new partnerships and strengthen existing collaborations with U.N. Agencies and other development partners during the UNGA sessions to overcome the emerging socio-economic difficulties with a renewed vigour to achieving the SDGs in IsDB member countries. 

The IsDB President is also expected to have strategic partnership meetings with the President of the World Bank, the President of the Inter-American Development Bank and several high-level officials from the U.N., donor partners and IsDB Member Countries. 

H.E. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser is a former Minister of Economy and Planning and former Governor of the Central Bank of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As a renowned economist, the IsDB Board of Governors elected him as President of the IsDB and Chairman of the IsDB Group in 2021. He previously served as the Alternate Governor for Saudi Arabia at the IMF, the World Bank, and the Islamic Development Bank. among other high-level positions.
