Iron Mountain — Iron Mountain Mayor Dale Alessandrini has proclaimed Saturday, May 6, as Lemonade Day in Iron Mountain.

Youth throughout the community are expected to participate by setting up lemonade stands across the area.

Lemonade Day is a free community-wide program that introduces youth to entrepreneurship by teaching them how to start, own and operate their own lemonade stand. After youth have completed the Lemonade Day curriculum with a mentor/parent, they are prepared for the real-world experience of owning their own lemonade business.

Youth are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some of their profit by giving back to the community that has supported them.

The Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce, along with other business supporters, are bringing this new program to Dickinson County. Businesses can get involved by allowing a budding entrepreneur to set up shop in front of their business on May 6 or by sponsoring the Lemonade Day program.

Many community-minded sponsors have teamed up to bring Lemonade Day to Dickinson County, including two Main Squeeze sponsors, First National Bank & Trust and Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Federal Credit Union. Fresh Squeeze sponsors include Northern Interstate Bank, First Bank, Great North Bank and Nicolet Bank. Lemmy Lemon sponsors include Dickinson Area Community Foundation, 41 Lumber, Bay College, Radio Results Network, WZMQ TV19, Dickinson Area Economic Development Alliance and U.P. State Credit Union.

Those who would like to sponsor or allow a child to put a lemonade stand at their place of business May 6 can contact Larson at the chamber at 906-774-2002 or email her at slarson@dickinsonchamber.com.

On Lemonade Day, everyone will have an important role to play in supporting area youth. Whether mentoring a youth, hosting a stand or purchasing lemonade, the entire community can be involved in supporting these young entrepreneurs.

“We are thrilled to be bringing such an exciting program to the youth in our area,” Larson said. “All parents who would like to involve their children can register on our website. This program is so needed, as it teaches not only financial literacy but also philanthropy to our youngest generation. I’d like to give a big thank you our very generous sponsors, as well.”

The goal is to register hundreds of youth who in turn will start new businesses all across Dickinson County on May 6.

Since 2007, more than 1 million kids have participated in Lemonade Day in 31 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, plus Canada and Bermuda.
