MELBOURNE — Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village, Inc. is the recipient of a $10,000 Operating Support Grant provided by the generosity of the Barbara Wells Family Foundation and Community Foundation for Brevard.
This award will cover the cost of water and sewer impact fees for Green Gables and connection for water service and plumbing for its outside operation.
City water access will be a welcome commodity for hygiene for volunteers and visitors, in cleaning the building, for future construction crews, and for watering gardens.
The grant includes funding for the installation of durable fencing along the Indian River Lagoon portion of the property as a permanent solution for safety for visitors while on the grounds.
“Foundations such as the Community Foundation for Brevard and philanthropy such as the Barbara Wells Family Foundation are the catalysts that keep historic preservation in our communities and so many smaller nonprofits operational,” said Green Gables Board Member Sue Fallon.
Green Gables is a 501(c)3 organization formed to preserve this Melbourne historic Queen Anne architecture built in 1896. The volunteers recently reached a milestone with the acquisition of the home and property. The next stage is the need to begin rehabilitation and restoration of this landmark.
This endeavor will require strategic fundraising and several years of rehabilitation and restoration.
Green Gables represents the legacy of William and Nora Wells, generous benefactors who played a key role in the development of early Melbourne. Their vision and generosity gifted the area with Wells Park, the first Melbourne Auditorium, and the first library. They established the first high school and helped with roads and sidewalks, also contributions to the community.
