Patrons from all across the state come to this event to celebrate our heritage and to support the Tennessee State Museum and its programs. It is one of the most beautiful event settings of the year, taking place in the marbled halls of the Capitol building and the expansive balconies overlooking Nashville’s exquisite vistas. This year the iconic and beloved entertainer Ray Stevens will be the special guest performer at the event.

Nashville native Cheryl McKissack is one of the co-chairs for A Tennessee Waltz and we asked her about her involvement in the prestigious event.

CM: The person who has influenced me the most in my life regarding philanthropy is my mother, Leatrice McKissack. During my formative years, I had the privilege of witnessing her active involvement in various nonprofit organizations including the Symphony Board, Cheekwood, and Federal Reserve Board. Serving on multiple nonprofit boards, she selflessly dedicated her time, energy, and resources to better the community. Observing her commitment and genuine desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives left an indelible mark on me. Her unwavering dedication to philanthropy instilled in me a deep appreciation for giving back and a strong sense of responsibility toward uplifting the community. My mother’s profound influence continues to shape my philanthropic endeavors, and her selfless actions serve as a constant reminder of the power of generosity and compassion.

NL: What inspires you to use your time, talents, and treasure to support nonprofits?

CM: I am driven by a desire to make a positive impact and contribute to causes that align with my personal values. By volunteering my time, utilizing my unique skills and expertise, and donating my resources, I can actively work towards creating meaningful change in society. Engaging with nonprofits gives me a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Contributing my skills and resources to meaningful projects or seeing the direct impact of my efforts can bring a deep sense of satisfaction and joy. Nonprofits often foster a sense of community and connection among individuals with shared interests and goals. By participating in and supporting these organizations, I can connect with like-minded individuals, build relationships, and work together towards a common purpose.
