YOUNGSTOWN — The Fund for Women & Girls, a community-led fund at the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, is bringing back one of its major events — Gems of the Valley — on Oct. 12 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield.

The free event is an evening of connection and celebration for women doing work in the Valley that is often overlooked, the organizers said.

For the first time, the Fund for Women & Girls — https://www.cfmv.org/gems-of-the-valley/ — is accepting nominations from the community as it seeks wider input of who to recognize as a Gem of the Valley. An online nomination form is available.

After submissions close Sept. 15, the Fund for Women & Girls Guiding Circle will select the awardees. Those selected will be recognized at the dinner and will have the chance to speak about the work to which they’ve dedicated themselves.

Tickets are available online at CFMV.org/events.

“After the success of our microfunding event earlier this summer, we knew it was important to bring back Gems of the Valley,” said Jana Coffin, a member of the Guiding Circle helping to organize the event and co-president of Project MKC. “This event is our way of putting the spotlight on the work of incredible women to make the Mahoning Valley a better place.”

Added Sharon Stringer, another Guiding Circle member and a psychological sciences and counseling professor at Youngstown State University: “With so many great things happening across the region, we wanted to put the spotlight on the women whose work is often unsung. Gems of the Valley is an opportunity to do just that and offer all attending the chance to make connections that support those efforts.”

As a community-led fund, each shareholder in the Fund for Women & Girls has a say in how grants from the fund are awarded. For more information on the Fund for Women & Girls or to learn how to become a shareholder, visit CFMV.org/fund-for-women-girls.

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley strives to be a leader and advocate for strategic philanthropy, partnering with donors to anchor a permanent and growing endowment and making investments in the Mahoning Valley that improve the quality of life for all residents.
