In today’s corporate world, it is uncommon for empathy and entrepreneurship to coexist. Nevertheless, Kwamara Thompson’s entrepreneurial odyssey, through her enterprise Thompson Education Consulting (TEC), stands out as an exception in several ways. A teacher by profession, Kwamara started TEC as an educational consulting company in 2013. For Kwamara entrepreneurship has always been at the very core of the American spirit. Her achievements in education informed her vision for TEC as a platform to foster empathy and equality.
Kwamara founded Thompson Education Consulting (TEC) on the core principles of empathy and humanity. TEC strives to bridge the gap between historically under-resourced students and essential resources. The services provided by TEC include learning management systems, equity-driven consulting, and professional management services. According to Kwamara, the aim of the company is to provide services that create a space for both equity and equality.
TEC leverages technology in effective education consulting and data analysis. Initially, the company served districts and schools. The data-driven material provided by TEC enables educators and administrators to monitor the progress and grades of the students. The company assists teachers in interpreting the data effectively. The company utilizes the data for both students and parents so that they have ownership of their education and goals. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted the focus of the company to virtual education. Further, the company began serving nonprofits by assisting with professional development and coaching on how to operate their organizations during a crisis.
TEC initiated the diversification of its portfolio through investing in real estate and formed TEC LLC as the holding company. With portfolio diversification, TEC shifted its focus towards philanthropy and community development. As part of its mission to give back to society, the company expanded initiatives by including a YouTube channel, a clothing store, a philanthropic arm, a Tennis club based in Miami, and an upcoming podcast. All of these projects are designed to serve communities of color.
The YouTube channel run by TEC is known as “I Am A Black Woman, Yes I Matter”. The channel spreads the message of equity and equality through community engagement programs. The subsequent popularity of the YouTube channel led to the birth of a clothing store inspired by the message that ‘Black Women Matter’. The clothing sold in the store continues to spread Kwamara’s message.
As part of its commitment to ensuring equity and equal opportunity for communities of color, TEC partnered with a tennis club known as Miami Tennis Club. Kwamara joined the club as a hobby for self care and now the club has become an avenue for philanthropy, health and wellness for the greater Miami area. Since tennis has traditionally been a noninclusive sport, Miami Tennis Club provides affordable access to students from under resourced communities. This provides communities with a safe outlet for physical activity.
The philanthropic arm started by TEC intends to give back to the community in the form of financial assistance, talent development, and community building. As part of its philanthropic and community development endeavors, TEC also facilitates collaboration among Black, and brown educators, professionals, and their allies known as ‘Let’s Break Bread Global’. The community encourages individuals to support each other’s events and businesses and volunteer with each other’s foundations to foster a global community support system.
Kwamara has successfully transformed TEC from an educational consulting firm into a broader platform with diversified portfolios. Today the company is known for its commitment to ensuring equity and equal opportunity for all communities.
