El Salvador works on UN sustainable development goals

Must Read

In this regard, the Government presented the draft bill on the Integral Law of Agricultural Commercialization to the Legislative Assembly, with which it intends to establish a strategy that will guarantee the food security of Salvadorans with the sustainable supply of food.

Legislative sources noted that the draft bill, supported by the Presidential Commission for Strategic Projects and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), establishes the creation of a national agricultural supply system, through the Agricultural Trade Development Center, which is a response to the problems identified in the agricultural sector.

In the opinion of the Presidential Commissioner for Strategic Projects, Cristian Flores, El Salvador lacks an organized and standardized agricultural supply system, which hinders the direct connection between farmers and markets.

This situation forces farmers to depend on intermediaries to sell their products, which generates “additional costs and reduced margins for the former,” he said.

It is necessary to create an institution to regulate the national agricultural supply system in the country, Flores said.

Its implementation is essential to improve product distribution, strengthen local production, guarantee fair prices and promote social inclusion in the agricultural sector, he added.

This approach is aligned with the UN SDGs by contributing directly to goals such as Zero Hunger, Reduction of Inequalities and Responsible Production.
