The Community Foundation of Henderson County is accepting nominations for its 2023 Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award and Dorothy “Dot” Dellinger Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award.
According to a news release, the Sauer Award celebrates individuals who provide exceptional contributions and outstanding leadership through their personal philanthropic efforts in Henderson County while the Marlow Award recognizes selfless leadership in charitable volunteer work.
Last year, the award winners were two local philanthropists — Dr. Steven Crane and Jane Davis. Crane was presented the Dot Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award, and Davis was given the Richard and Vina Sauer Charitable Leadership Award.

This year’s applications have been streamlined into a simple online form located on the Foundation’s website, the release said. Videos and stories of previous recipients can also be found on the “Distinguished Philanthropists” page.
Founded in 1982, Community Foundation of Henderson County’s mission, according to its website, is helping people who care make lasting contributions to causes that matter. One of Community Foundation’s primary purposes is to assist engaged philanthropy in the community. The Foundation accepts gifts from individuals, families, businesses and organizations to create a permanent pool of charitable capital from which grants are awarded.
Nominations will be accepted through May 22. Nominees for the awards must be living residents of Henderson County. Committees, corporations, and organizations are not eligible. Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award
Throughout their lives, Richard and Vina Sauer came to view every challenge as an opportunity to inspire positive change. In 1992, the couple made the first-ever million dollar gift in Community Foundation’s history with the intention of supporting various causes close to their hearts, including assisting high school seniors in their pursuit of higher education. The Sauers are long remembered for their modesty – routinely giving support to their community without the need or want for recognition. In 1994, the Foundation established the Sauer Award to honor the couple’s philanthropic legacy.
Dorothy “Dot” Dellinger Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award
When reflecting on the Henderson County community’s philanthropic spirit, the organization’s “Founding Lady” Dot Marlow continues to inspire charitable hearts through her legacy. According to the release, Case joined Community Foundation at a pivotal time, serving as the first female board member and bringing with her the spark that would ignite decades of community giving. The Dorothy “Dot” Dellinger Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award honors her selfless volunteer leadership in philanthropic work for our community’s greater good. It is awarded to someone who continually advocates for others and works so that everyone can become their best self. Like Case’s tireless enthusiasm to better the community, each recipient reflects her extraordinary spirit.
