DCF awards grants to nonprofits helping low-income residents
Through the Benjamin F. Potter Trust Grants Fund, the Delaware Community Foundation has awarded $250,000 to 13 nonprofit organizations serving the economically underprivileged in Kent County. Recipients also serving Sussex County include: First State Community Action Agency, $50,000 to help with homelessness prevention and diversion; Harry K Foundation, $22,000 to address childhood hunger; Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, $45,000 to provide gently used clothing to children, teens and families; Caring Hearts Helping Hands Inc., $5,000 to purchase gifts for families with children who cannot afford presents during the holidays; Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Delaware, $13,500 for housing and support services for low- to moderate-income families; Milford Housing Development Corporation, $35,000 to provide home repairs to qualifying homeowners in Milford; Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, $20,000 to support the Kent County Breast Care Assistance Fund; Delaware Futures, $5,000 to help disadvantaged high school students prepare for college; Children’s Beach House Inc., $3,750 to support Kent County youth participating in its youth development program; and YWCA Delaware Inc., $5,000 to help Sexual Assault Response Center participants avoid, eliminate or alleviate financial emergencies caused by their victimization.

Dave Marshall Tennis & Fitness will host the Nike Pickleball Camp Friday, Oct. 13 through Sunday, Oct. 15, at its facility on Plantation Road outside Lewes. CHEER Inc. is seeking vendors for its annual fall craft and hobby show set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Warren L. and Charles C. Allen Jr. CHEER Community Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown. Admission is free and open to the public. Merchandise ranges from books, baseball cards, toys, woodworking and T-shirts to leather goods, magazines, antiques, military memorabilia, jewelry and more.

Helping hands free community event set Oct. 14 in Milford
Milford Advocacy for the Homeless Inc. will host a helping hands free community event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, in the parking lot at United Church Milford Campus, 985 N. DuPont Blvd., Milford.
Community members, especially those in need, are more than welcome.
Organizers are offering free food, clothes, haircuts, bike repair and health screenings. The event will be held rain or shine.
Milford Advocacy for the Homeless reaches out to offer assistance and support to those who are displaced and homeless in the community.

Out of the Darkness Walk set Oct. 14
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will hold a community walk starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at Bicentennial Park, 220 NE Front St., Milford. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The one-mile walk will be an opportunity to boost awareness of suicide, which is a leading cause of death today. The Out of the Darkness Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope and support. It unites communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental health conditions have affected people’s lives and the lives of their loved ones. During the walk there will be opportunities to share messages of hope, healing and remembrance, along with honor beads. There is no fee to participate. SDTR barn dance fundraiser set Oct. 14
Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding will hold its 7th annual barn dance from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at 17170 Harbeson Road, Milton. Sun Outdoors haunted trail fundraisers kick off Oct. 14
Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay announced its haunted trail will be open to the public from 7 to 10 p.m., Saturdays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28, at 20628 Long Beach Drive, Millsboro.
Ticket prices are $10 for overnight guests and $15 for the general public. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and Delaware State Police Troop 7.

TidalHealth sets flu clinic at Apple-Scrapple Fest Oct. 14
TidalHealth will host a flu clinic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Apple-Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville. Clinical teams providing walk-up vaccinations will be located at the TidalHealth Community Wellness Van next to the firehouse. Seasonal quadrivalent flu vaccinations will be administered to individuals 8 years of age or older. Patients ages 8 to 17 must bring a parent or legal guardian to sign consent forms. The quadrivalent flu shot is designed to protect against four different flu viruses to provide broader protection. A physician’s order is not necessary. Flu shots will be free. TidalHealth will not offer any COVID-19 testing or shots at this event.
Flu shots are encouraged for anyone over the age of 6 months, but especially for people over 65, those with heart or lung disorders, or at high risk for diseases or diabetes. TidalHealth will not offer high-dose flu shots for seniors at this event.
Participants are asked to wear a short-sleeved shirt for easy access to the upper arm. The vaccine being given is effective for everyone meeting the age restrictions.

Beebe and VIA to offer screenings and vaccinations Oct. 18
Beebe Healthcare and the Village Improvement Association will offer health screenings and flu vaccinations from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the VIA clubhouse, 415 N. Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach.
Regular flu vaccinations for ages 18 to 64 and high-dose vaccinations for those over 65 will be offered. Health screenings include blood pressure, total cholesterol, blood sugar, body mass index and bone density. The Beebe Mobile Health Unit will be onsite and offer full lipid panels, hemoglobin A1C, and overdose prevention training. Fire, police and emergency personnel are invited for the overdose prevention training.
The screenings and vaccinations are free of charge and no appointment is needed. The public is welcome.

Girls’ Night Out fashion and philanthropy event set Oct. 19
A Girls’ Night Out event to benefit the Harry K Foundation is set for 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, at Schellville, Rehoboth Beach. The evening of fashion, food, friends and philanthropy will support the foundation’s work to defeat childhood hunger throughout Delaware. Human trafficking awareness program set Oct. 19
The Village Improvement Association will sponsor a program on human trafficking from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, at Rehoboth Beach Public Library in the upstairs meeting room. Light refreshments will be served at 12:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Human trafficking, the exploitation of individuals for labor or commercial sex, has been the subject of increased media attention in recent years. The Delaware General Assembly passed comprehensive legislation in 2014 designed to prevent and penalize human trafficking, and to provide protection for victims. A human trafficking unit was created by the Delaware Department of Justice in 2022 to specifically address and handle human trafficking investigations.
Deputy Attorney General Caroline Brittingham will present information about human trafficking in Delaware. Yolanda Montgomery, executive director for Zoe Ministries, a nonprofit organization that provides a home to juvenile victims of sex trafficking, will speak about the resources available to victims in the local community.

Milford Museum to host ghost walk tours Oct. 21
The Milford Museum will host ghost walk tours, an unforgettable evening of spine-tingling thrills and chilling tales, Saturday, Oct. 21. The first tour will begin at 5:30 p.m., at the Towers Bed and Breakfast, 101 NW Front St., with tours continuing at 30-minute intervals. The last one will begin at 8:30 p.m., and all end at the Causey Mansion, 2 Causey Ave., Milford. Participants will immerse themselves in the haunted history of Milford as expert guides lead them through the darkened streets and eerie corners of the town. Attendees will experience the supernatural side of Milford while exploring haunted landmarks and sharing eerie stories of ghosts, legends and mysteries that have shrouded the town for centuries.
Since it will be dark, visitors are asked to bring a flashlight or use a cellphone flashlight. Costumes and masks are encouraged.

Pink ribbon tea set for Oct. 26
October is Breast Cancer Survivors Month, and the Sussex County Survivorship Coalition will hold its annual pink ribbon tea Thursday, Oct. 26, in two locations.
After several years of holding the tea virtually, the coalition members are excited to offer in-person events from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Seaford District Library, and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the McCurry Conference Room at the Tunnell Cancer Center near Rehoboth Beach.
Attendees will join other survivors for an enjoyable afternoon of inspiration and celebration. The presenting speaker, Dr. Kathryn Ellis, OTD, OTR/L, AASECT-SC, will discuss Sexuality After Cancer. Light refreshments will be served at both events.

Farm bureau photo contest Oct. 31 deadline nears
The deadline is looming for the Delaware Farm Bureau Promotion & Education Committee’s annual photo contest.
Amateur photographers of all ages are encouraged to submit their best agriculture-related images online through Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Winning photographs will be announced during the Delaware Farm Bureau’s statewide Annual Banquet in December. The top four winning photos will be on display at the Delaware Farm Bureau’s state office and the Delaware Agricultural Museum through 2024.
Photos do not have to be limited to on-the-farm scenery; they can include imagery of markets, farm-fresh produce or products, and other agriculture-related topics.
Awardees can also earn monetary prizes, and six honorable mention awardees will earn a certificate. The top four winners will also earn a certificate and $50 for fourth prize, $100 for third prize, $150 for second prize and $200 for first prize, along with the public display of their award-winning photographs.

Victoria’s dining to benefit Read Aloud Nov. 2
The Boardwalk Plaza Hotel and Victoria’s Restaurant will host the fourth wine-and-dine evening to benefit Read Aloud Delaware at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, at 2 Olive Ave., Rehoboth Beach. The evening will feature a five-course dinner including an amuse-bouche, appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert. Wine pairings will be selected to complement each course.
Read Aloud Delaware is a children’s literacy program with the mission to create a lifelong impact through early childhood literacy. The vision is for every child in Delaware to have the fundamental literacy skills to succeed in school and life.

Elks Most Valuable Student scholarship entries due Nov. 13
The Elks National Foundation announced the start of the 2024 Elks Most Valuable Student scholarship contest.
The MVS scholarship is available to high school seniors or the equivalent who are United States citizens. High school graduates are not eligible to apply. The judging criteria are based on academics, leadership, service and financial need. Applicants do not need to be related to an Elks member; however, Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 in Lewes will be the local sponsor, reviewing and determining which applications to forward for consideration.
The application must be completed online and submitted by Monday, Nov. 13. The 500 national winners will be announced in April 2024.

Annual Thanksgiving worship service set Nov. 19
The Milford Area Ministerial Association will host its annual Thanksgiving service at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 300 North St., Milford. St. Jude to host children’s nativity pageant Dec. 9
St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church will welcome parish children to tell the Christmas story in its annual nativity pageant, “Darkness into Light,” at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9, at 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes. The public is invited to see the story told through music and acting as children of the parish portray the holy family, wise men and other characters in the most sacred of Bible stories. The cast is entirely made up of children, with the exception of an adult narrator who plays John the Baptist. There is no charge for admission, but donations of canned food will be gratefully accepted.
Elks legacy award scholarship applications due Feb. 5
The Cape Henlopen Elks announced its legacy awards application period begins Friday, Sept. 1. Legacy awards provide $4,000 scholarships for children and grandchildren of dues-paying Elks members.
