During his address to the plenary at the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit, Savarin stressed the need to assist less developed nations through long-term, lower-interest loans and debt relief.

He mentioned that the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, exacerbated by climate change, calls for even greater leadership at the multilateral level and increased commitments from governments and other stakeholders to take on the implementation of the proposed targets to move up to the next level.

“We strongly believe that greater commitment, solidarity and transformative actions are needed to achieve these goals within a realistic timeframe,” he said.

CARICOM, he said, supports the political declaration set out by the secretary general in a renewed call for all member states to recommit themselves to this transformative process.

The partnership also called for urgent action by the international community to reform the global financial architecture and ensure an enabling environment for developing countries to actively participate in and benefit from the global economy.

He assured that the member nations of the Caribbean Community support the call to align national budgets with the SDG pathway.
