For those who give in charity, men and women, and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan, it shall be increased manifold, and theirs shall be a generous reward
(Quran: 57.18)
The tragedy of having to flee from mistreatment and oppression is one that is not unfamiliar to us.
From learning about the persecution faced by Prophets and Messengers of God (peace be upon them all), to hearing the stories of conflict and loss our elders shared. These moments of heartbreak beckon us towards advocating, supporting and uplifting those in a similar situation.
The number of refugees and displaced people in the world have grown exponentially in recent years. Additionally, persecution, human rights violations and natural disasters have contributed to the displacement of more than 110 million people.
Australia for UNHCR – the UN Refugee Agency’s national partner in Australia, is there to help. We raise funds and awareness to deliver life-saving aid to people in need around the world. Undoubtedly, UNHCR is often the first in and last out of refugee crises.
Islamic Philanthropy program
Australia for UNHCR has developed an Islamic Philanthropy program, which seeks to garner support from the Muslim community in Australia. Working in the Islamic Philanthropy team at Australia for UNHCR, I have gained a deeper understanding of the dedication and financial contributions required to ensure the adequate assistance of refugees and displaced people.
Refugee Zakat Fund
In 2017, UNHCR developed the Refugee Zakat Fund (RZF) to assist vulnerable families who are forced to flee. At present time, our teams have helped over 1.5 million refugees and displaced people from countries including Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Jordan, Yemen and Lebanon.
Khatema and her family forcibly fled their home in Yemen. She’s one of millions of Yemenis who depend on humanitarian support to make ends meet.
“We lack everything… no one knows about our condition except God. Thank God for what we have,” Khatema says.
Families like Khatema’s rely on your Zakat to provide them with cash assistance to help them afford shelter, water and medicine.
Additionally, the RZF is Shari’ah compliant and is supported by 16 fatwas from credible scholars and institutions. We also ensure that 100 per cent of Zakat funds are distributed to those most in need, like Khatema.
How you can help
Australia for UNHCR cannot continue to assist vulnerable people forced to flee without the generous support from the community. For refugees and displaced people, this support has served as a beacon of light and hope for those who have been forced to leave their homes due to no fault of their own.
As a team member witnessing the impact of donations to UNHCR’s projects, I encourage the Muslim community to dedicate their Sadaqah and Zakat donations to Australia for UNHCR. We must come together to support our brothers and sisters suffering these hardships. We must let them know that they are not alone.
Please contact me via my email address and I would be happy to answer any of your questions about how to donate to this worthy cause or follow this link to make a donation.
May God reward you for your kindness, with an abundance of wealth and happiness. May your assistance be a form of light amidst darkness for countless vulnerable families.
