A Philanthropist’s Grand Estate in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts

Must Read

Listing of the Day

Location: Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Price: $12.5 million

This grand four-level home on 6 acres in the heart of the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts was the longtime home of the late Armenian philanthropist Assadour “Aso” O. Tavitian, who was known locally for his generous support of arts groups in the Berkshires.

Tavitian was a Cold War refugee who immigrated to New York by way of Beirut in 1961 and went on to found SyncSort, one of the country’s first software development companies, in 1969, according to published reports. He remained loyal to his Armenian roots, establishing the Tavitian Foundation, which provides scholarships to students of Armenian and Bulgarian origin, and running a program to train Armenian government officials through the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Tavitian died in April 2020 at the age of 80. Tavitian’s Stockbridge home on Prospect Hill Road was overseen by a top team of designers, including the architect and preservation expert Theodore Prudon and interior designers Katie Ridder and Shaun Jackson, according to William Pitt/Julia B Fee Sotheby’s International Realty, which has the listing. Mr. Prudon continued to collaborate on additional projects at the estate, including the elaborate stone walls, gates and formal gardens, and is still actively involved with the property today. This is the first time the home has been listed for sale.

The glass-walled breakfast area has open mountain views.

“You feel like you are in a gracious estate home,” said listing agent Patrice Melluzzo, of William Pitt/Julia B Fee Sotheby’s International Realty. “It was built in 1993, but it has all the grandeur and finishes of a home built in 1915.”

“It’s an incredible building, an incredible house,” she said.

The extensive stonework on the estate includes a stone wall across the street, three levels of terraces, a gunite pool and areas with formal and informal gardens, Ms. Melluzzo said.

Other architectural details include a stone and shingle exterior, a grand center staircase, warm hardwood flooring, extensive millwork, classically inspired moldings and paneling, interior columns, an oval-shaped dining room and a sunroom with bright natural light.

The front door opens into a double-height entry hall with a large Palladian window “that looks out to the view that the whole house has,” Ms. Melluzzo said. “You have that view of the Berkshire Hills from anywhere on the first floor.”

The library and living room “open to that incredible stonework and the patios,” she said.

The eat-in kitchen features a breakfast area with mountain views, a large island, multiple sinks, marble countertops, high-end appliances and a pantry.

The second floor holds three bedrooms, including the primary suite, which has a private paneled office, a kitchenette, a bedroom with a fireplace and a walk-in closet with built-ins.

The lower level holds a media room, a mirrored exercise studio, a wine cellar, a small kitchen, a library and a changing room for the pool.

The property is quite private, Ms. Melluzzo said. “You can’t see the house from the road.”

Stats

The 9,339-square-foot house has five bedrooms, six full bathrooms and three partial bathrooms. It sits on a 6.2-acre lot. There is a separate three-bedroom guesthouse.

Amenities

Amenities include a pool, a guesthouse, nine fireplaces, a media room, an office, wraparound tiered terraces, a wine cellar, two libraries, a fitness studio, an elevator, formal gardens with statues and a fountain, a generator, a two-car attached garage and a free-standing building with an additional two-car garage.

The property features elaborate stone walls and terraced gardens.

Neighborhood Notes

“It’s a 10-minute walk to downtown Stockbridge, and you’re very close to Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow,” Ms. Melluzzo said, referring to popular performing arts venues in the Berkshires. The Norman Rockwell Museum and the Stockbridge Golf Club are also nearby.

“There are a million cultural events going on, all of which are close by,” she said.
