New Delhi: Every year on June 23, the United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated all over the world to pay respect to the value and ethos of those engaged in public service and recognise the efforts of public servants in creating a better society. The day also aims to encourage young people to go for careers in public service. On this day, the United Nations, the global body that established this day, gives United Nations Public Service Awards which is hailed as the most important and prestigious international accolade when it comes to public service. The origin of this day
On December 20, 2002, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) marked June 23 as the Public Service Day. The United Nations Public Service Forum is a global event whose main focus tends to be on the development of capacity in public governance. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, commonly known as UN DESA holds the forum with a host country every year and the event works on capacity-development workshops the UN Public Service Awards ceremony and a roundtable discussion among the dignitaries.

Public Service and SDGs
In order to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, the role of effective institutions is paramount which has been recognised by SDG 16 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The government has to play the main role regarding the implementation of the SDGs and ensure that they are actually followed on all levels. In order to do that, governments often form or restructure institutions under it to ensure faster implementation of the SDGs and review the progress adequately.

In every state machinery, the public administration or public service plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth implementation of the plans and programmes of the governments. It ensures a comprehensive improvement in the lives of the common people and that is why, public service workers should always be encouraged. Because it is a thumb rule that when a government without a capable public service department never really manages to implement its agendas.
