SPONSORED: Under new local leadership, Comcast team strives to provide best service, and philanthropy

New South Valley Vice President Rigo Topete said his team’s success comes from Comcast’s store leaders driving a culture of care for Central Valley customers.

Under new leadership and with an eye toward improving connectivity for customers, business clients and those less fortunate, Comcast in the South Valley is on the move.

Comcast’s residential and business offerings in the Central Valley — video, high-speed internet, mobile service and more — have a reputation for quality under the XFINITY and Comcast Business brand.

The company also provides Lift Zones that were created during the pandemic. LiftZones provide free Wi-Fi access, powered by  Comcast, to help connect youth and their families, seniors, and community members to the Internet to fully participate in educational opportunities and the digital economy.

Comcast has 16 Lift Zones in Fresno County —and a total of more than 150 Lift Zones throughout its California service area. As a national initiative, there are 1,250 Lift Zones nationwide.

The Central Valley currently hosts seven Comcast retail stores. The newest one opened six months ago in Clovis. In the last 18 months, the Central Valley’s retail team has been listed in the top three teams in the country for Comcast.

New South Valley Vice President Rigo Topete said this success comes from Comcast’s store leaders driving a culture of care for Central Valley customers.

“The folks here in the Central Valley take a lot of pride in making sure that we take care of our customers, our communities,” said Topete.

Topete was promoted to the South Valley Vice President position 18 months ago but has been a part of the Comcast family for 19 years. He started his journey with the company in 2004, when he was recruited out of community college as a billing and repair team member.

From there, Topete served different roles in the Comcast company, allowing him to gain experiences that helped him serve in his leadership role. The Oakland native held a director position in Kansas City, Missouri, before he moved back to his home state to take on the role of Director of Retail and now as the VP for the South Valley. Topete said his experience working in different regions, such as Kansas City and the Bay Area, has allowed him to provide the best service for people in the Central Valley.

Despite serving as the 33rd largest city in the country in terms of population, Fresno offers a small town feeling because of generations of families that choose to stay in the area. Topete said this aspect drew him to the region.

“That’s why it’s so important long term for us to continue to invest in the Central Valley. I will tell you, it’s the area. That’s No. 1 as far as rural broadband expansion for our business,” said Topete.

Rural broadband expansion includes working with communities to create an impact and help families in the area. Recently, Topete and his team were in attendance for the Life Zone launch at St. Rest Baptist Church on Fresno’s west side. At this event, Comcast surprised 200 families with free laptops, part of a $200,000 investment to bring digital equity to the Valley.

“Everything is about making sure that we deliver for our community,” said Topete. Nearly 50% of the population in Fresno is Latino, making them the largest ethnic population in the area. Topete’s Latino background allows him to  authentically connect with this community.

Topete hopes to leave an impact as a Latino in this leadership role. During primary school, Topete said he never saw someone that looked like him in a leadership position as he currently holds. “I take great pride in helping Comcasters that I’ve met along the way — Latino or non-Latino — and helping them grow, just like others have helped me. My purpose is tied to the community and helping kids, especially first-generation kids that are of Latino background that went through or that are probably going through the journey I went through in trying to find confidence,” said Topete. “I want to see more Latino or other minority leaders in our communities here in California.”

With his drive to push Latino communities not only in Comcast, but in Fresno, he serves as a board member for the UNIDOS employee resource group in California. He has also helped launch resource groups in other regions as well.

There are nine employee resource groups in Comcast California. This sense of community and culture supported by Comcast in the Central Valley continues to show why customers and employees stay with the company. Two initiatives in the company that aim to support small businesses are Comcast RISE and Comcast Business Mobile.

Comcast RISE is a program geared to support small businesses owned by women and people of color most of whom have been drastically impacted by the pandemic.

In the last 90-days, Comcast Business Mobile has gone on this campaign to specifically help small businesses reach their maximum potential.

“Now more than ever, small businesses are looking for ways to increase productivity and reduce costs. Comcast Business Mobile was designed with features small businesses need. Including data options that let businesses pay for the data their team needs, freedom to change data options or add new lines as their team grows” Topete said.
