A Northamptonshire slimmer has lost five stone and will now take on the London Marathon. Tarryn Mote, 32, said her confidence was at an all-time low in January 2018 and decided to do something about it.
Tarryn, from Wellingborough, recalls always being bigger than her peers and never feeling completely happy with how she looked. She said: “I wanted so desperately to feel good, I would buy new clothes as an attempt to boost my confidence but if I’m honest, I never felt very good in them.”
She joined her local Slimming World group and followed their healthy eating plan, which gave her the “knowledge and skills to make changes to the way she ate” and improve her “understanding of her relationship” with food.

Tarryn said: “My group is very motivational. I get so much support and inspiration from other members. I made easy changes to the way I ate and cooked and still enjoyed all my favourites like poached eggs on toast, homemade soup, jacket potatoes and spaghetti bolognese. It wasn’t long before I started to see the changes both physically and mentally.
“I wasn’t very active before losing weight and leisurely Sunday walks were the extent of my exercise regime. I decided to embrace Slimming World’s activity programme, Body Magic, and since then I’ve incorporated new ways to get my body moving on a daily basis.
“As my confidence has grown and I’ve found a love of exercise I joined the gym and am doing spin classes. I also took up running and I’ve now ran two half-marathons and am all set for my third.
“Running the London Marathon is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I feel honoured to be running with the Slimming World team to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK as I’ve seen first-hand how devastating this condition can be for loved ones.”
Slimming World Consultant Sue Shone runs weekly group sessions in Northamptonshire and said: “Tarryn is a real inspiration to us all and we are so proud of her. When she first came through the door she wanted to lose weight – however, she had no idea what a huge transformation was about to begin and certainly no idea that she would one day be running the London Marathon, it’s incredible.
“She is proof that with self-belief, determination and the right kind of support from a group of people who understand what it feels like to struggle with your weight and truly care about your success, anyone’s weight loss and activity dreams can be achieved.”
On top of achieving her dream weight, Tarryn is now representing Slimming World in their 14-strong official marathon team this April. The Slimming World members, consultants, head office staff and managers come from across the UK and Ireland.
Between them, they have lost more than 79st with the runners raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK, Cancer Research UK, and the Irish Cancer Society, Slimming World’s official charity partners.
Tarryn is running for Alzheimer’s Research UK and aiming to increase awareness of how keeping a healthy weight and moving more can improve health and wellbeing. According to Alzheimer’s Research UK’s ‘Think Brain Health’ campaign, being active is one of several ways people can help protect brain health and reduce their risk of dementia in later life.
As the UK’s leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK is committed to changing the lives of everyone affected by dementia. The charity supports scientific research into life-changing discoveries to prevent, treat and, one day, cure the diseases that cause dementia.
Lucy Squance, Director at Alzheimer’s Research UK says: “We’re incredibly grateful to Tarryn and all the Slimming World members who’re pushing themselves to the limits by running in the London Marathon to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. We can’t wait to cheer everyone on from the side-lines.
“Sadly, one in two of us will know someone affected by dementia and will know all too well the devastation the condition causes. So we can’t thank Slimming World and its members enough for their support, giving hope to families today, and to future generations to come.”
Money raised for Alzheimer’s Research UK, Cancer Research UK, and the Irish Cancer Society helps fund life-saving research. Anyone who would like to sponsor the Slimming World Marathon team can do so by visiting here.
