HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SPEND ON A WEDDING GIFT?

Must Read

In the United States alone, there are more than 2.3 million weddings held every year. If we averaged that out per day, we’d be looking at 6,200 weddings every 24 hours! With the average wedding having over 170 guests, it’s safe to say that you’ll end up being one of these guests at some time in the future, and that means that you’ll need to think seriously about a wedding gift.

Weddings are unique in terms of gift giving. Knowing how much to spend can be difficult. Gift giving should be thoughtful, honest, and heartfelt, and there are some simple rules that you can follow to get this right.

It’s the Thought That Counts…

We all know this cliché, but it’s one that usually resonates strong in every situation. Thought is always more important than the gift, but this doesn’t necessarily translate to ‘cheap’ gifts. Putting thought into a gift usually means getting something that is very special or of high quality, and that can make wedding gifts inherently more costly than other gifts throughout the year.

One rule of thumb that many people follow is to give a gift that is comparable to the cost of the wedding. If a couple are spending up to $100 per guest, then a gift of similar value is usually considered to be appropriate.

Of course, there are some considerations to be made. Sometimes you will need to travel extensively to get to a wedding. If you are expected to make a significant financial effort, then purchasing a more affordable gift is considered to in perfect taste. Keep in mind that the bride and groom value your presence above all else.

Another thing to consider is how well you know the couple. If you are an acquaintance or colleague, then you could go slightly below the average wedding gift value of $100. If you are close friends or family and can afford to spend more, then go right ahead.

Wedding gift buying doesn’t have to be overly expensive and it’s easier when you relax and purchase gifts that are practical and heartfelt. To gift happiness is not strictly about how much you spend; it’s about what the gift means to the recipients. Quality home goods, a gift experience, or even a contribution to the cost of the wedding are all popular gifts around the United States and around the world.

If you’re ever in doubt, talk to the bridal or groom’s party who will be able to help with suggestions for a special gift.
