Hello there, lovely philanthropy women friends! We are having a beautiful start to spring here in New England, and as we head into spring there will be some exciting new events in feminist giving. Here are just a few of the big doings in gender lens philanthropy.

LaTosha Brown and Duchess Meghan to be Honored by Ms. Foundation

The Ms. Foundation for Women announced the honorees for the 2023 Women of Vision Awards: Celebrating Generations of Progress & Power.” This year’s annual gala, marking the 50th anniversary of the nation’s oldest women’s foundation, will take place at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City on May 16. Among those to be honored are Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and (familiar to readers of Feminist Giving!) LaTosha Brown. Each year, the foundation honors visionary leaders and game-changing grantee partners committed to the Ms. Foundation’s mission of advancing women’s collective power and creating safe, just and equitable futures for all. 

Excessive Wealth Disorder Institute Launches to Call Attention to the Social Harm Caused by Excessive Wealth

A newly launched California-based think tank wants to confront the societal harm caused by extreme wealth inequality and promote a more balanced distribution of wealth. The Excessive Wealth Disorder Institute (EWDi), funded by The Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund’s WhyNot Initiative, is pushing for a more balanced distribution of wealth in the United States by elevating policy solutions focused on curbing the excessive wealth of the nation’s richest individuals. EWDi’s inaugural Executive Director, Gabriela Sandoval, Ph.D., and Alan Davis, EWDi Board Member and President of The Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund, are both available to discuss the role wealthy individuals and philanthropists should play in funding and supporting policy solutions that address wealth hoarding. Chat them up on this topic!

WPI Honors Spelman College President

The Women’s Philanthropy Institute (WPI) recently announced Spelman College President Dr. Helene Gayle as the 2023 Shaw-Hardy Taylor Achievement Award recipient, in recognition of her philanthropic leadership and efforts to advance gender and racial equity. Dr. Gayle is the 11th president of Spelman College, a historically Black women’s liberal arts college. Before joining Spelman College, she was president and CEO of The Chicago Community Trust—one of the nation’s oldest and largest community foundations—where she helped close the racial and ethnic wealth gap in the Chicago region.

Cracker Jill Continues its Support for Women in Sports

In partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation, girls and young women across the nation will have an opportunity to share their #IAmCrackerJill stories about perseverance and leadership for the opportunity to win funding to fuel their athletic dreams. One deserving recipient will become the next face of Cracker Jill. With an added $200,000 in funding, this new award will help expand resources for women in sports. As part of the brand’s mission to increase gender equality in sports, Cracker Jack extended its partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) and has donated a $200,000 donation to help expand access and opportunities for girls and women in sports. Aspiring female athletes from 15-24 years old can submit their sports story at www.CrackerJill.com to apply.

Girl Scouts of America Chooses New Leader for Corporate Affairs and Communications

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) recently announced the hiring of Alexandra Traber McNamara as Chief Corporate Affairs & Communications Officer (CCCO). Alexandra brings decades of unique experience and expertise to help GSUSA aggressively advance its work supporting girls today and into the future. She brings professional experience from the White House, The Brunswick Group, and most recently served as Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Global Communication at the  Estee Lauder Companies.
