Hoi An named among nine best city destinations with beaches

Located in the lower reach of Thu Bon River in the coastal plain, about 30 km south of Da Nang city, Hoi An has been known in the international market by various names such as Lam Ap, Faifo, Hoai Pho, and Hoi An. The only Southeast Asian port-market in Vietnam and very rare in the world, Hoi An keeps almost 1,360 architectural relics intact. These include streets, houses, assembly halls, communal houses, pagodas, shrines, clan houses, ancient wells and tombs. They exhibit both Vietnamese traditional art characteristics and the convergence of eastern and western cultures.

Accordingly, the ACV needs to proactively improve its capacity to ensure aviation safety and security in the new situation, step up the completion of its curricula system, and conduct aviation safety and security training.

In addition, it is tasked to perfect and maintain the professional process, introduce solutions to strengthen the management and administration capacity of the aviation security command and management team, improve and enhance the ethics, manners, communication, behavior and discipline of the aviation security control force.

The authority also particularly noted that the ACV needs to review the management and operation process of aviation security equipment, especially X-ray scanning.

The ACV is asked to strengthen coordination with media agencies to popularise to air passengers the provisions of law related to bringing dangerous items on aircraft and other regulations related to aviation security and safety so that passengers can comply with regulations, among others.

Rare sea turtle species found in Co To

A rare species of sea turtle listed among the wild animals threatened with extinction has been discovered in the coastal area of Co To island, Quang Ninh province, drawing plenty of attention from both locals and tourists.

Ngo Gia Manh, 20, of Dong Tien commune in Co To district, was the first person to find the sea turtle when he sailed a boat to Bien Dong beach with some of his friends.

The group recorded some clips and photos and posted on Facebook, drawing plenty of public attention. In a clip, the turtle weighing about 20kg had risen from the surface of water three times, with the longest time being about 15 minutes.

A few months ago dolphins also appeared in the coastal area of Co To island right next to the wharf.

This marks the first time that a sea turtle species has been spotted after a sea turtle weighing 125kg was released into the sea 10 years ago.

Co To island district is one of 16 marine protected areas approved by the Prime Minister due to its high level of biodiversity.

360-kg wartime bomb deactivated in Dien Bien

The Dien Bien Phu City Military Command in the northern border province of Dien Bien has safely detonated a bomb weighing 360 kg which had been leftover from previous conflicts.

The bomb was found near Na Yen Bridge in Xom village of Na Tau commune. The MK-117 bomb was buried deep in the ground for a long time and was only revealed after a heavy rain and landslide occurred on August 17.

According to the Military Command, the bomb, which had its fuse intact, is believed to have been left over by the French army.

Immediately after receiving the news, relevant forces were deployed to the site to transport the bomb out of the area. They later defused the bomb at a designated site in the province.

Hanoi tetanus cases triple, two deaths recorded

The capital of Hanoi has seen 18 patients suffer from tetanus since the beginning of the year, marking an increase of three times compared to the same period last year, with two deaths documented.

According to the Hanoi Centre for Disease Control (CDC), from August 11 to 18, three more people diagnosed with tetanus were hospitalised.

Among the hospitalisations, a man, 65, from Ba Vi district, had hit a hard concrete edge in a muddy field and injured the sole of his right foot. He then washed himself and took antibiotics, but did not receive a tetanus shot.

Several days later he was suffering from symptoms such as jaw cramping and trouble swallowing. He was then admitted to Military Hospital 105 and subsequently diagnosed with tetanus. He was transported to the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases for treatment.

Doctors say many people remain unaware of the importance of having a tetanus vaccine after suffering a puncture wound, especially after stepping on rusty metals.

Many patients who suffer such wounds fail to go to medical facilities for treatment and often use herbs which can lead to severe infection and tetanus bacteria entering the body.

Health experts warn that tetanus is a life threatening disease, especially among patients with other illnesses, such as myocardial ischemia which occurs when blood flow to heart is reduced, thereby preventing it from receiving enough oxygen.

Step back in time to explore the lives of Hanoi’s middle-class families a century ago

Titled Nếp Xưa, an exhibition currently held at Hà Nội Museum allows attendees to travel back in time and immerse themselves in the essence of Hà Nội’s past.

Situated on the museum’s first floor, Nếp Xưa presents an impressive collection of nearly 200 historical documents and artefacts and recreates old Hà Nội’s living space.

Nếp Xưa greets visitors with an evocative scene – an ancient village gateway flanked by water jars. The setting pays homage to the serene charm of Hà Nội’s yesteryears. Stepping through this gateway, visitors are transported to a vivid reimagining of Hà Nội’s landscape decades ago.

The exhibition serves as a window into both Hà Nội’s history and the socioeconomic shifts of the early 20th century. The influence of French colonial architecture redefined the city’s urban fabric through new neighbourhoods and styles, yet maintained the core of Vietnamese tradition.

Central to the Nếp Xưa experience is a journey through the lives of affluent urban families of the era, whose homes were two-story villa houses.

The exhibition is divided into four distinct spaces: the living room, the worship chamber, an introduction to villa architecture, and a display of period clothing. These historical settings come alive with more than 200 meticulously curated documents and artefacts sourced globally.

Living rooms of the period were adorned with carefully arranged antique wooden furniture.  French-inspired furniture such as a fireplace is also included. The worship space, meanwhile, embodied solemnity, with an intricately carved, painted, and gold-gilded altar. Central to this area were the throne and tablet, surrounded by sacred artefacts, including incense bowls and vases crafted from diverse materials.

To further enhance the “time-travelling experience”, with just VNĐ30,000, visitors to the museum can also rent Việt phục, a traditional Vietnamese costume, at the reception desk. Each visitor can rent the costume for taking pictures for 30 minutes.

The exhibition will continue to be held at Hà Nội Museum until further notice.

Vietnamese drug dealer jailed in UK for eight years

A Vietnamese man who played a significant role in ‘large-scale’ drug dealing has been jailed in the UK.

Vien Phan Hoang, 37, was sentenced to eight years in prison after police found 130 kilos of cannabis, 600 ecstasy tablets, two kilograms of ketamine and around VNĐ1 billion in cash at a property he was renting.

Three other people, all Vietnamese, have also been convicted following an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

In January 2021, NCA officers followed a man carrying a large bag, later identified as 26-year-old Bui Tuan, to a house in Birmingham, UK.

When officers raided the house, occupants Dinh Van Tran, 26, and Vien’s wife Bui Thi Huong, 29, were seen attempting to hide packages of money in the garden.

Search teams found the cannabis vacuum packed in bags and ready for sale. More drugs were discovered hidden inside walls in the loft area of the property.

Some of the cash was found hidden in a bush, while other bundles had been thrown into a neighbouring garden.

NCA officers also discovered 600 ecstasy tablets and two kilos of a white crystalline powder later identified as ketamine.
The three men and a woman were later charged.

Hoang and Huong both pleaded guilty, but the others denied drug supply and money laundering offences.

In March 2023 Tuan and Tran, who was tried in his absence, were cleared of drug supply offences but found guilty of money laundering at Birmingham Crown Court.

They were both given six month suspended sentences and a warrant has been issued for Tran’s arrest.

On August 18, at the same court Hoang was sentenced to eight years in prison. The Judge said he played a significant role and was involved in large scale drug dealing with his motive being financial gain.

Huong received a six-month prison sentence suspended for six months.

NCA senior investigating officer Paul Boniface said: “This gang ran a stash house for a wider network of criminals – a location where drugs were stored before being pushed out to street dealers and sold, with cash moving in the opposite direction.

“Our investigation led to the seizure of drugs worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, profits from which would have fuelled further criminality and exploitation had we not taken action.

“The NCA and our partners are determined to do all we can to protect the public from serious and organised crime.”

Long wins gold at first Asian MMA tournament

Nguyễn Tiến Long secured Việt Nam’s only gold medal from the first Asian Mixed Martial Arts Championship without fighting a second in the final of the men’s 65kg traditional event on August 20 in Thailand.

Earlier, he defeated Mu Chun Seung of South Korea and Luo Tia Long of China on the way to the gold-medal bout.

In addition to the gold, Việt Nam also took a silver through Dương Thị Thanh Bình in the women’s 54kg modern MMA class.

Bình started her match with heavy kicks on her Chinese rival Liu Xiaoni who seemed to have prepared well. Liu mastered in grappling as she took Bình down and locked.

The Vietnamese escaped from the difficult position once but in the second time she had no way but tapping on floor to ask for a surrender.

Two other representatives of Việt Nam were Nghiêm Văn Ý, men’s 65kg modern MMA, and Nguyễn Thị Thanh Trúc, women’s 49kg modern MMA , took home two bronzes.

Athletes will return home and prepare for the Asian Indoor Martial Arts Games which will be held on February, 2024, in Thailand.

2023 AFF Championship: Vietnam play Malaysia in semi-finals

U23 Vietnam will take on U23 Malaysia in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2023 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship after beating U23 Philippines 1-0 on August 22 evening.

Huu Tuan celebrating his goal for Vietnam in an encounter against the Philippines on August 22.

Coach Hoang Anh Tuan did not send in his best players, because a draw or even a 0-3 loss to the Philippines could also send Vietnam to the semi-finals. Therefore, a number of reserve players in the August 20 match against Laos, such as Xuan Tien, Huu Tuan, Hong Phuc, Long Vu were sent in from the beginning.

Without having many scoring chances, Vietnam suddenly opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Dang Duong passed a cross to Huu Tuan who then kicked the ball close to the vertical post, putting Vietnam ahead.

Philippines players launched lightning attacks in an attempt tn earn an equalizer. However, they could not break the defensive line of their opponents.

Indeed, the Philippine players carved out two scoring chances from free kicks, but they failed in the end, though Vietnamese goalkeeper Van Chuan all made mistakes.

The Philippines accepted the 0-1 defeat, and Vietnam cruised into the semi-finals.

In the coming two semi-final matches, Group C winners Vietnam will take on Group B winners Malaysia, while Group A winners Thailand will clash Group B second-placed Indonesia.
