Community Outreach a Cornerstone of WCVB Channel 5’s Exclusive Broadcast Partnership of the Boston Athletic Association’s 127th Running of the Boston Marathon

BOSTON, MA— April 10, 2023 – WCVB Channel 5, Boston’s news and community leader, is proud to be the exclusive local television station broadcasting the Boston Athletic Association’s 127thrunning of the Boston Marathon live on Monday, April 17th. As part of WCVB’s media partnership, the station is committed to working with the B.A.A. throughout the year to highlight not only their many other athletic events, but their extensive community outreach initiatives as well.“It has been an honor to work with the B.A.A. to help amplify stories of the good work that the organization is doing in the community through their Official Charity Program. Both the B.A.A. and WCVB have service to the community at their core, and this shared vision has made the partnership exceptionally gratifying,” said Kyle I. Grimes, WCVB President and General Manager.“WCVB has a long history of giving back to the community it serves and is proud to partner with the B.A.A., an incredible organization that works tirelessly to engage communities in and around Boston in the sport of running so that everyone, from all walks of life, can reap its many benefits,” said Karen Holmes Ward, WCVB Director of Public Affairs and Community Services. A key element of WCVB’s exclusive media partnership includes ongoing broadcast coverage that highlights the good work that the B.A.A. is doing in the local community in a recurring series titled “Better By The Mile.” Leading up to the race, the NewsCenter 5 team is sharing stories about important topics including running safety, profiles of organizations that can help break down barriers of entry to the sport, as well as the various health benefits to an active lifestyle, among others. Coverage also includes inspiring stories of runners who put in months of hard work in order to run 26.2 miles to help raise money for a charitable cause. Helping to further bring the station’s commitment to life through a broadcast public service announcement is NewsCenter 5’s own Matt Reed, reporter and father of a young son, who is running his first Boston Marathon this year to raise money for Boston Children’s Hospital, part of the official charity program of the Boston Marathon, to support the life-saving work the medical staff does at the hospital every day. Matt’s donation page can be found on WCVB’s Boston Marathon section of its website and connects with the Boston Children’s Hospital “Miles for Miracles” fundraising page. A variety of community focused stories are also regularly featured in this special section on WCVB.com. In addition, WCVB has partnered with the B.A.A. on several key initiatives and community events including support of the Boston Running Collaborative (BRC) through a series of dedicated public service announcements produced by WCVB. The B.A.A.’s BRC is comprised of organizations and individuals committed to building a diverse Boston running community, improving health and wellness, and expanding access to running and walking in Boston with a focus on communities of color. The PSAs feature a diverse group of nine runners who are serving as BRC ambassadors in the Boston community. The role of each ambassador is to help recruit new participants in their respective communities and spread the word about the many benefits running can have on overall health and wellness. Recognizing that the sport of running is one of the most easily accessible to all, as long as you have access to the right footwear, WCVB collaborated with Adidas, Official Footwear and Apparel Supplier of the Boston Marathon, to help direct 40 pairs of Adidas running shoes to those in need through B.A.A. partnering non-profit organizations Dream Big! and Girls on the Run at the Boys & Girls Club of Dorchester.
