Six notable Lubbock chefs will take on a “Chopped”-style challenge and serve up a side of fundraising for the South Plains Food Bank later this month.
From 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, April 20, people will be able to sample the results of Showdown at the Jones at the Texas Tech Club’s West Side Club Level in Jones AT&T Stadium. Tickets are $50, open to the general public and can be purchased at go.clubcorpcharityauctions.com/showdownatthejones/Campaign/Details.
Proceeds from the event will go to the South Plains Food Bank.
The competition, styled after Food Network’s “Chopped,” will have six Lubbock chefs take a basket of food items that can be found at the South Plains Food Bank.
The chefs will be able to cook in their own kitchens to create a delectable dish, which will then be judged by several judges – whose identities will not be revealed until the judging begins.
Of the six chefs, four of them have been announced, and final chefs will be announced closer to the event. As of April 7, the currently known chefs include:
“I’m excited,” Hernandez said. “It’s going to bring all these chefs across town together and creating good food for the folks who visit us. I can’t wait to get the box and see what is in it.”
Sponsorships are also available. Sponsors can sponsor a chef, or sponsor cups or napkins to get their logos on those items. Covered S Ranch has donated the meat for this competition and is one of the sponsors. Whataburger is the title sponsor, and helped with the food items that will be in the mystery basket.
Myrisa Rutter, director of member experience for the club, came up with the idea during the previous summer and hopes to see it become an annual event.
“I really wanted to do a charity event, and I’m very passionate about the food bank,” Rutter said. “It’s a fun way to help our community, and it’s really kind of a celebration of the Hub City coming together to help.”
Mindy Weaver, director of development for the South Plains Food Bank, said the fundraiser is unique and exciting. The event will also allow people to learn more about all the organization offers, including the 5-acre GRUB Farm that helps people learn relevant skills.
“There’s education, there’s the GRUB Farm, the apple orchard, It’s not just food boxes,” Weaver said.
