The Lupus Research
Alliance (LRA) is the world’s leading non-governmental,
non-profit funder of lupus research. Over the past 20 years, the
LRA has invested over $250 million in lupus research in more than
560 research and clinical studies. More recently, the LRA
established an affiliate organization, Lupus Therapeutics (LT),
which is responsible for the coordination, conduct and management
of a North American-based clinical trial consortium, the Lupus
Clinical Investigators Network (LuCIN).

Position Overview

The Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) is looking for an individual
to manage and develop LRA’s institutional giving including grant
writing, prospect research and funder stewardship.  The
Institutional Giving Manager is responsible for overseeing all
aspects of the LRA’s foundation grants including overall foundation
pipeline by identifying prospective grant funders, writing
proposals and submitting reports on deadline.  This individual
will report to the Chief Development Officer and will support other
Development team members as required.  This role is
responsible for finding new funding opportunities for the LRA and
writing polished proposals to secure grant money.  The overall
goal is to focus on cultivating, maintaining, stewarding, and
growing existing relationships with funders, while developing new
connections with any funders that have an interest in lupus
research and diversity initiatives to advance such research.
  The Institutional Giving Manager will be an integral
member of the Development team and work very closely with the
Industry Relations Manager (pharma/bio tech support) and Senior
Director of Philanthropy (individual major gifts).

Responsibilities 

  • Builds strong relationships at all levels of the organization
    (LRA/LT) to ensure complete understanding of the programs and
    identify funding needs.
  • Develops and maintains a thorough understanding of all current
    and past grant relationships.
  • Writes, produces, and submits all proposals and reporting
    materials for funders, noting opportunities for increased revenue
    and increased engagement.
  • Develops proposal boilerplates for LRA/LT’s funding needs by
    assembling relevant information (including project nature,
    objectives/outcomes/deliverables, implementation, methods,
    timetable, staffing, budget, standards of performance, and
    evaluation); prepare customized funding requests for varied
    funders; update contents according to current programs and their
    progress as needed.
  • Assists in the annual grant budget preparation process in
    collaboration with Program Managers and Finance.
  • Develops foundation grant revenue goals, in consultation with
    the VP and Chief Development Officer, for general, program, and
    other support. Monitors progress toward goals, partnering with key
    development staff responsible for managing the relationships.
  • Comply with grant reporting requirements and meet all deadlines
    as established by funders.
  • Ensures reporting compliance for all grants and provides
    writing and editing support to program managers and the development
    department when needed.
  • Continually researches, identifies, presents, and maintains
    sources of corporate and private grant opportunities that align
    with LRA’s priorities.
  • Prepares research profiles of potential foundation, corporate,
    and individual donors.
  • Ensures all online donor search engines, including but not
    limited to GuideStar & Charity Navigator, have accurate data
    and an up-to-date organization profile.
  • Work with the Communications Team to determine publicity and
    social media requirements for grant awards.
  • Maintain current grant applications in a virtual database
    including grant tracking and reporting spreadsheets.
  • Uses database to inform management of grant status and progress
    toward goals, both informally and via management reporting
    documents.
  • Attend and or lead as needed, foundation funder meetings with
    the Executive Director or other staff members as appropriate.
  • Follows up on all grant denials to determine the cause, and if
    re-submission is an option, map out the steps to building a
    stronger proposal/relationship for the next round and execute those
    steps.
  • Works collaboratively with the Industry Relations Manager for
    pharmaceutical industry relations and the National Director of
    Corporate Development to research and pursue all funding
    opportunities through corporations who are donating in other ways
    such as events.
  • Supports other development staff when directed, in activities
    such as Events, Individual Donors, and department-wide writing
    projects.

 Qualifications 

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent required.
  • 5+ years related work experience conducting similar duties in a
    not-for-profit fundraising office.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, applying for, and
    receiving grants from public and private sources.
  • 3+ years of experience in prospect research
  • Excellent writing skills and proven experience with writing and
    securing grant funding in a non-profit.
  • Experience writing and communicating scientific research
    information to a lay audience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and analysis of data for grants
    required.
  • Direct experience working with institutional funds is
    preferred.
