CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids couple who have donated more than $500,000 to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital have been recognized for their philanthropy to the hospital and other health care organizations in Eastern Iowa.
Jared and Carol Hills started giving to St. Luke’s in 1978 and have continued their financial support for health care programs at the hospital since their first donation, the hospital said in a news release.
In 2021, they donated $250,000 to help create the Jared and Carol Hills Dialysis Suite as part of the St. Luke’s Hospital inpatient modernization project.
Jared Hills and the couple’s children inherited polycystic kidney disease, which results in kidney failure. All three have had successful kidney transplants, and the family wanted to improve the lives of others who have PKD.
The Hills received the St. Luke’s Foundation Founder’s Award on June 29.
“We are thrilled to honor the Hills in this way,” said Mary Klinger, president of the UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Foundation. “They have given so much to improve the lives of others. Their continued giving to St. Luke’s and other organizations shows how much they care for their community. We are deeply grateful.”
The couple also has given generously to Tanager Place, Big Brothers Big Sisters, United Way and the University of Iowa, where they first met as students.
